After earning both her BA and MA in 1930, Lulu Merle Johnson becomes the first African American woman to receive a Ph.D. at The University of Iowa. With graduate studies in American history, English history, and sociology, Johnson goes on to earn teaching and administrative positions at Western Virginia University and Florida A&M.
