Brazos Santiago Texas Jan 7th 1865. 8 PM Dear Ellen,
After waiting 16 days for a mail I was again made glad, this afternoon by the re-ception of 2 letters from your dear self. I also got 2 from home-one with Mat's & Adda's likeness in it & one from [?] W Willis in Tenn. You can hardly imagine the satisfaction it affords us to receive a stock of letters after being 2 or 3 weaks without hearing from any one or place. In addition to our letters to day, we got news of Thoma's' & Sherman's victories victories. That in connection with the good news that I got in any letters namely that you all are well has a tendeney make me feel pretty well. I feel very thankful that your health has been preserved.
I am glad you are going to go to school this winter I hope you will have a good teacher & be successful in your studies, but your success depends to a great extent upon yourself-you can learn without any teacher. I am sorry that it is so sickly where you are. I trust you will be very carefulof your health. Avail yourself of every means in your power of preserving your health. I am sorry that you can not have an oportunity of attending church oftener. I know how to sympathis with you in that misfortune.I hope you will continue to
