Dubuque. 5 September 1861
Last night I was suddenly ordered on duty as Quartermaster and I borrowed two quilts from Mrs. Degresselles and slept quite comfortably in my quarters in the Officers' Department. I hope I shall be able to come home tomorrow night, or at least on Saturday-there is no sign yet as to when we will have to start. The Sillers are travelling to Cedar Falls today to settle there. I have not seen any of them. We must anyhow try to arrange it so that you some time next week could come in here and see how Camplife looks. I had an excellent salt and peppered beefsteak this morning—it rained down beautifully on us while we were eating. Kiss the children thousand times from your devoted husband.
