Whereas I, Matthew McDowell of Washington, Washington Co., Iowa, hold a certain Draft [never?] drawn by J.R Dick of [Meadville?] on John Thompson [No 2 Yale?] Street [New York?] for one hundred and thirty Dollars Dated July 11th 1857 and whereas Said draft was not presented for payment until after the failure of Said Thompson on the 25th of August of the Said Year, by which failure I have been prevented from collecting Said draft, now therefore this is to authorize said J R Dick to [claim?] from said John Thompson whatever [dividend?] I may be entitled to under the assignment made by said Thompson for the benefit of his creditors, and in case said assignment shall be [lifted?] by said Thompson I authorize said J R Dick to [apportion?] me (to the amount of my debt) to the proposition made by said John Thompson to the meeting of a portion of his creditors held at the Astor House in New York on the 16th and 17th of March 1858 which said proposition was in substance as between [the?] said Thompson to give
