Dear Tom
Yours of the 18 came to hand today. .we arrived safe on the l7th I started a few days before Kats .vith my horses and Charly came as far as Philadelphia with her. She stood the journey remarkably well. we found all very glad to see us. Some of the niggers had been very sick but all are doing well.
Our Federal Officers hava not all resigned yet but most of them have, the only officers of importance that have not resigned are the P Ms and Collectors of our Port. We consider them necessary for our own purposes at present, but they will all resign in a little while and the State will quietly walk out peaceablyif_ we can, boisterously if we must, but go out 'we will that you can depend on. So you see this little Republic will not last much longer, .notwithstanding the fine weather in Iowa.
