Camp near Helena Ark Feb. 1st 1863
Let no one outside the family see anything in this letter: I am not in the best of Spirits. yesterday the new commissions came to our Co. & our old Orderly Myron H. Begole is 1st Lieut.
This is a short statement of the whole case & I must now give you my opinion as to the means by which such a result was brought about.
The promotions were made as I wrote you they would be, on the recommend of the Col. to the governor. the Col recommended the orderly & of course he received the commission. I have talked with Frank about it & he says that it was the choice of the Col. with out any move in that direction on his part or that of Capt. Rathbun, but I do not believe it. The day before the Capt. went away he & Lieut. Fobes were called in to consult with the Col. in regard to the new officers in the Co. Commissioned & non Commissioned & in my opinion the subject was then broached by one or the other of them. I lay most of the blame on Capt Rathbun. I may be mistaken but he and the orderly were warm Friends at home & I think he desired to help him along as far as he could I am a good deal down Spirited this morning.
