ESTHER WILLIAMS
Esther Williams, born March 28, 1902, in Vinton, Iowa, is a
marvelous, energetic woman with a memory for names and events that
are a part of Vinton History. Esther is a storyteller, recalling
events from the early part of the century to the present.
Esther was the only girl in a family of boys, a bright child
with good business sense. Except for a short period of time, Esther
has been in Vinton. She attended Tulsa (Oklahoma) Business College
and worked for a CPA there, until, at her mother's insistence, she
moved back to Vinton. Her mother passed away in 1920, and Esther
became surrogate mother to nieces, nephews, and neighbor children.
She looked after her father, and in 1921 went to work for the "Cedar
Valley Times." She is still working there, six or seven days a week
among the first to arrive in the morning, and often the last to leave
in the evening.
Most of Esther's skills in the variety of jobs she has performed
at the "Times" were gained through on the job experience. She has rarely
missed work, and when she had to miss, she may well have prepared the
payroll from her hospital bed.
People sometimes refer to Esther as "nosy." Esther describes
herself as a very curious woman. She has found that the best way
to get information is to ask - and more ofthen than not, Esther has
been able to find out what she wants to know!
Esther feels that the behavior of the young people who deliver the
"Times" has changed through the years, but she is still there reminding
them of how they should behave - because she truly cares. Esther is a
caring person - she cares about people - and about doing a job right.
