- Predictions to Cone - 1996
Little did our Federated clubwonen of 1896 drean that their program
would be broadcasted over the air by radio in 1946 or did they?
lany of the advancements they were working toward have cone about by hard
work, such as sanitary conditions, to-day we have garbage collections, the
streets are cleaned by the city and we have "no nore outside toilets" in the
city Units. Our woien sponsored the Pure Food Law. To-day we have a county
Health Clinic in Burlington and three large hospitals with Nurse training
schools. A group of woien are working on a "Cancer Cure urive" and we hope to
have a place for this in the-Clinic.
The City Federation of Woien's clubs in Turlington disbanded nany years ,■■
ago and the individual study clubs in the county affiliated with the State
Federation, they found there was strength in nunbers. How could the wonen of
1896 know that we would pass thru two "orld Wars and thus advance "onen's
Rights? The wonan of to-day has an entirely different outlook on life than
did her sister of 1896. Wars nade it necessary that she leave the shelter of
her hone and work side by side with nen in factories. Naturally the Hoae had
to suffer.
Aiding cane the autonobile and the Airplane naking us closer neighbors at
hoie and abroad. Our clubs have exchange Scholarships with the Latin A-nerican
countries and hope to have sone with Russia in the near future. "The ^ood
Neighbor Policy. ' In our own state we have a Scholarship and Loan department
for our girls. With the autonobile cane new roads and highways cutting down
the fine trees and shrubbery, so now we nust find places for the birds and
wild life. Wonen are working toward reforesting and planning parks. With the
new roads n has brought the town and country wonan closer together and with
the scarsity of food during the war the town and country wonen cooperated and
wonen had to learn about Nutrition, each county had a Set-up and Lecturers were
sent out over the state.
Out of the Iowa study club's exhibit of -'Turlington in the early day of
1833 to 1845 at the state Fair when Iowa celebrated her hundredth year, grew th
the Des koines county Historical Society with hopes that we will be able to
have an annex to the Public Library for a luseun.
Fron cultural studies our wonen have taken up the study of present day problens
of course they do not neglect the Fine Arts.Religion has been a question
where should it be taught..in the hone in the school or in the church...what
will be the outcone?
Since wonen have voted there is a Legislative dept. in the clubs, wonen
study the Bills and thru Social Welfare they are working to have better laws
governing our state Institutions.
The Child of to-day is the Adult of tonorrow so wonen are trying to help
the less fortunate boy and girl.We have five Youth Centers in Burlington for
Recreation where the young people nay go for entertalnnent.Iuch is being said
about Youth Conservation ...will these Centers help Delinquency???? -
There is nuch stress put on the Anerican Hone life to-day....it seen hone
is a place to go when you have no place else to go or just a place to sleep.
We need nore hone life in Anerica.
Wonen now feel they should be given responsibile public offices in
politics, .ten say wonen have a good general idea of things but are not trained
in any special departnent. So ny prediction is that in fifty years you will
bee "onen holding high political office of responsibility, for by that tine
she will have attained her Equal Rights.
