Mrs. Nile Clarke Kinnick, Sr.
Dear Mrs. Kinnick,
It is ostensible that you have been informed previously by the
Department of the Navy of the decision to name the*Navy school at
Yokohama, Japan, in honor of your son, Nile C. Kinnick, Jr.
In July, 1959, operation of the. large American military schools
of Yokohama, which were operated by the Army until that time, was .
taken over by the Navy. At that time, administrators of the schools
were asked to select suitable names Tor these schools, and to submit
these names to the Department of the Navy for consideration. Navy
schools throughout the world are named for distinguished Americans

As we were casting about for a suitable name, we were most pleased to find a personal history of your son, whose achievements and service to his country seemed to a fine example to set before other young
Americans. The enclosed biographical sketch was forwarded to Washington, and we were pleased and gratified when official approval of the
name came to us from the Bureau of Personnel Instruction.
Dedication services for the newly-named school will be held on
April 19, I960, and a tentative outline of this program is enclosed
herewith. The school to be called the "Nile Clarke Kinnick, Jr.
American School" is a large building housing some one-thousand students
in grades one through twelve. It is a fine school, of excellent reputation, and I know that you will be proud to have it bear the name of
your son. Certainly wo shall always endeavor to be worthy of this name.
This letter is being forwarded to you through the Alumni Records
Office of the University of Iowa. We should appreciate having your
correct address in the near future.
We wish to congratulate you on this occasion, and send our kindest
Very truly yours,
