Kinnick Scholarship Awards
To Seven University Men
Awarding of Nile Kinnick scholarships to one senior, one sophomore
and five freshmen students at the University of Iowa was announced
yesterday by President Virgil M.f
Hancher.
Winners are Max William Sowers, Ames; Richard C. Riecks, Dan-
bury; Donald Frank Pryauf, Iowa
City; James Allan Sangster, Iowa
City; James P. Sandrock, Dubuque,
all freshmen; Willard K. Shaw,
A2, Marshalltown, and Robert G.
Zender, C4, Cresco.
The monetary value of the
scholarships is not being made
public, Dean C. Woody Thompson
said last night.
According to President Hancher, final decision on the awards
was made Thursday following review of the scholastic records of
the award winners.
Scholarship awards are made
for one year and are renewable
only on the basis of continued high
scholarship.
Richard C. Riecks, graduate of
Danbury high school in 1947, was
star of the Danbury basketball
team in its appearance in state
tourney play in 1946 and 1947.
Class president for three years,
editor of his high school annual
and salutatorian of his class,
Riecks was also outstanding in
track and baseball. He hopes to
become a coach.
Jim Sangster of Iowa City was
an all-state quarterback in football in 1946. He was an eight
letterman in high school, winning
three each in football and baseball
and two in basketball. He was
president of Kis class and of the
etud/tnt council. He intends to
study commerce at the university.
Max William Sowers captained
the football team at Ames high
school in 1946. A leader in student
activities, he also played basketball. He plans to study journalism.
Another potential newspaper
man is James P. Sandrock, graduate of Dubuque high school and
sports editor of his school paper.
He lettered twice in football and
received all-state honorable mention. His high school activities included work in chorus and operetta.
With an outstanding high school
record in football and track, Donald Fryauf of Iowa City is interested in dramatics and forensics.
An all-state football star irt 1946,
he was 220-yard dash champion
of the Mississippi Valley conference and anchored the 880-yard
relay team which won the state
indoor championship in 1946.
The Nile Kinnick award to Willard K. Shaw was first made in
1945 when he was graduated from
Marshalltown high school. Military
service intervened and Shaw was
unable to accept the award until
February, 1947. The award announced Friday by President
Hancher is a renewal of the Kinnick honor.
A senior in the college of commerce, Robert G. Zender expects
to receive his bachelor of science
degree in February. A graduate of
Cresco high school in 1941, he
attended Upper Iowa university
for two years and spent three years
in the army before enrolling at
the University of Iowa. He won
eight major letters in high school
and is now a reserve tackle on
Dr. Eddie Anderson's Hawkeye
squad.
