[London] Friday—Quarter past 4. [?July, 25, 1828]
Marianna mia,
I was coming home full drive this afternoon, or rather rushing through Lincoln's Inn Fields with Thornton for that purpose, loaded with books & parcels, when finding myself greatly heated, & looking at my watch, we saw it was too late to think of getting to Gracechurch St. by four o'clock. So we come tomorrow. I drank tea in Queen St. yesterday, & then sent Thornton to Mr. Whiting to know whether I could see him the same evening. He appointed eight o'clock, & I went & staid with him till near ten, when I returned, took a crust of bread & cheese with Mr. Holmes (all the rest are from home) & went to bed. To day I spent an hour (from 1 to 2) with the Gliddons, & dined with them, (but I must first tell you I saw Henry in the course of the morning, & think
that Thornton will have the D'Herbelot to translate-- we are to know, when Mr. Clarke returns,--which he does on Sunday);—well,--at 2 I returned to Mr. Whiting by appointment, when I saw his partner Mr. Swift, & it was agreed that I should commence next week a series of papers for the Atlas: — and there is talk of things further & much greater. So be of good cheer.
