Kensington-Feb. 11th. [?1841] My dear Mathews , I am sorry to have ceased to communicate with you during this sudden abrupt interval, but I couldn't help it. I had an incursion of business, which forced me to attend to nothing else.- Allow me to say, that [page break] if you have any serious misgiving as to putting my play[1] on your boards,--I mean before you read it, & on account of any unseasonableness of blank verse or other too great mixture of seriousness, which you may justly perhaps think not so suitable as it might be to the habits of your [page break] familiar & lively boards,-I shall take it as a kindness if you will tell me so at once, & not read it; because, you see, you would thus save it the disparagement of a rejection; which might do me harm with another manager.- Au reste, I hope there is vivacity [page break] enough in it, & in far greater quantity than the seriousness; & you will find your friend La Rousse grown as big, without losing his gaity, as Vincent tells me you are yourself.- With kindest remembrances to the cara sposa,[2] Ever truly yours , Leigh Hunt |
