Hammersmith— April 3 My dear Burroughs, There are four books, all in the London Library, in /wh/ most of which,— I think I may say, in every one,— cases of mistaken personal identity are to be found, some of them extremely curious, and quite fit to add to the puzzle in the present instance. I add the numbers in the two London Library catalogues, in case Thornton may not possess both, or may have neither of them at hand. 1458— Causes Célébres— (Published in 1775) 1459— Do. with additions (up to the good 1835) 2662— English Causes Célébres (edited by Craik) 4108— Leigh Hunt’s Hundred Romances of Real Life. 12333— Lounger’s Common-Place Book The French work, unfortunately, is very voluminous; The first edition being in 26 volumes, & the second in fifteen; and I am sorry I cannot call to mind the particular cases, or the names of the principal persons concerned. But I dare say there are good indexes, and I think one of the names is [?Costar]. Perhaps Thornton could take a rush to the library, and glance through index and volume Too. It might be worth his while, though his time is so precious. Craik’s book, I am sure, contains a very remarkable English case. [written sideways across page 3] Leigh Hunt 3rd. April ?1856 Mystery is the special object and passion of the gentleman called the Lounger; so that he can hardly fail to have a care or two of the kind. I was once very intimate with his book; but particulars escape me, as to the point desired. There is a good deal of him however in my own book the Hundred Romances. I wish I had a copy of it, but have not seen one for years. [paragraph cancelled and cancellation continued on page 1] |
