Transcript	[Letter head] The Bank of Adelaide . Adelaide 2nd Dec. 1876 My dear Walter Hunt, I was simply shocked to find by my brother’s letter that so many years have passed since I wrote you. I must have purposed many times and so laid my conscience to sleep. If only you could be placed in support with me you would find the same warm feeling undiminished for all of you friends of my youth. I trust it is also so with you for me. I do not find any change in my feelings even towards friends in Aberdeen known before I got to London. I was very angry with myself when Robinson told me that I had never acknowledged [page break] Beethoven, the engraving which was Mr. Leigh Hunt’s and which is one of my most cherished possessions. I fear I am really a bad correspondent. – Well! how has it gone with you altogether since seventeen years ago? I know you have had your trials, much to suffer, much to bear with, much to wear you. Enduring either pain or pleasure seems to be all we are here for and sometimes I say “coi[?cui] vous?” We shall be satisfied – where there is no work nor device – on the other side. Still, here we are, and it befits us to carry ourselves as men and as Carlyle puts it “The thriftiest soul is the cheerfullest Tis a thriftless thing to be sad.” It only wastes tissues. Write and tell me of [page break] yourself and of your family of your mother, aunts and brothers and sisters. Of Mrs Alexander if you have seen her lately, poor body she has it got her sorrow to seek. What a fine girl she was and what a fine woman she is. I think I would have fallen in love with her had I seen her long ago. I think she is very admirable. Your cousins the sons and daughters of Sir John Morphett are very nice. The women are all sensible, affectionate, make good gentle wives. Lady Morphett is a very nice person, homely, motherly. He and I often talk of the Hunts and the Gliddons. I told him now I had sinned against you in not writing and that I [page break] was to do it this time. He corresponds with some of you still. I have laid my hands on photos of my wife and myself, pretty recent, which I enclose. I should like to have one of you and your wife if you have them lying bye [sic] you. Robinson said you had recently lost one of your children. I was very sorry. Write me and tell me all about yourself. You know I have only two daughters one the child of my first wife, one of the present. Monica the elder is I fear not too strong. Offer my kind regards to Mrs Walter and remember me most kindly to your mother and her circle . Ever my dear Walter your sincere friend John H Sutton
