Dear Sir,
(For so an old reader may address you though personally unknown) have you any influence over the arrangements of the guide? Presuming that you have, I venture to offer you some observations thereupon.
With pleasant recollections of the London Journal (one alas of the many victims of mès alliances) I welcomed the announcement of the guide, gilded as it was

High Street Croydon May 6th 1837 . Dear Sir , (For so an old reader may address you though personally unknown) have you any influence over the arrangements of the guide? Presuming that you have, I venture to offer you some observations thereupon . With pleasant recollections of the London Journal (one alas of the many victims of mès alliances) I welcomed the announcement of the guide, gilded as it was [page break] with a name so interesting to all -but I am not writing an eulogium -we are neither of us members of the French Academy. With the first No I was somewhat disappointed but on the whole pleased with the folio of eight not over large pages -the second no was ominous of evil -prognosticating an increased of size and price, both bad (when will folks learn to leave well alone?) and now we have No 3 -with eight of its enlarged columns all about that wretched Greenacre (I exclude from my amount your paper which would redeem a whole Newgate Calendar.) Is not this pandering to the worst cravings [page break] of the worst of the many? and is there not a paper ever to be met with that will treat of such things as briefly as they deserve? If I am impertinent in troubling you with this piece of grumble pray pardon me, and if you should ever come to Croydon will you tell me so and you shall receive such a welcome not as you deserve but such as a young tradesman can give. By way of an essay towards an excuse I may add that I call one friend who is not unknown to you and at whose house I once met a son of yours . I am , With much esteem Yours J.M. Langford .
