Hammersmith- Nov. 4 . My dear Sir , Knowing my admiration of the writings of Professor Newman, and the reverence in which I hold his conduct, you will imagine how I must have been gratified with the letter which he has sent you. - In regard to what he says of the ritual, I have to observe , [page break] first, that it was intended solely for the use of such persons, as being anxious, like myself, to delay no longer the recognition he speaks of, could be content with the least and most unvaried form ^of service wherewith to begin it secondly, that I am aware how desirable /it/ enlargement and variation ^of that form would be, ^in order to diversify the successive weeks of the year, though I /had/ hoped its very brevity would enable the varying weekly sermon to hinder it from falling on the attention; and thirdly, that if any church which is in contemplation, should [page break] chuse to incorporate it with a greater service, or to adopt my portion of it, or to use it merely as a suggestion for the production of something better, it is equally at the disposal of those who could so turn it to account . Meantime let me hope, that the little fire, thus hit upon a few household altars, may spread to many, if only as a spark of the dawn of that greater light. -I am, dear Sir , Very truly yours , Leigh Hunt . J. Chapman Esqre . [page break] Leigh Hunt Novr 4. 1853 |
