My dear Thornton,
The word “[?Bauergate]” in your letter puzzled me exceedingly for some [ ? ]; till I learnt the [?mistake] that Charles had made of “grandchild” for “granddaughter”. As there is no ill however, great or small, in which some good, or turn to good, cannot be discovered by a good spirit,

Hammersmith . May 19th . My dear Thornton , The word “[?Bauergate]” in your letter puzzled me exceedingly for some [ ? ]; till I learnt the [?mistake] that Charles had made of “grandchild” for “granddaughter”. As there is no ill however, great or small, in which some good, or turn to good, cannot be discovered by a good spirit , [page break] the mistake enabled you to show [?how] gracefully you could [ ? ] of it . The comfort given me by the rest of your letter was great indeed. Do not judge of it by these hasty words. I went to bed, and rose with it; and shall go to bed, & me with it again & again. The weather was “too good” for me, but it is not so, [ ? ] it [ ? ] [ ? ]; nor do I think that any thing could be too good for me at pre- [page break] sent. I fancy I could bear even an incursion of total prosperity . I thought [ ? ] a good [ ? ] that was on the part of the Queen, and for the same reason! May both the Beatrices be as happy as their names, -- with no such [ ? ] of belief as those imagined by that infernally great poet, Dante, who was a great [?ninny] heavenwards; or I have no doubt he has long found [page break] out in some charitable corner of heaven, where he is certainly blushing at the entrance of every newcomer. I have often thought of attempting an epilogue to his Commedia, with that for one of the fancies . Your ever loving father , L.H . |
