[?Chelsea] Wednesday-Oct. 21. [?1839][1]
Dear Sir,
Pray excuse my apparent rudeness, by reason of the present most painful absorption of my time. Mrs. Hunt will have told you how welcome your friend is to the republication of the little book.[2] And will you have the kindness to make my best & respectful apologies to Mr. Lovett, & tell him I designed to have written him not only a letter, but a public letter, stating my whole views of the progress of society & of the best means of forwarding it, but was prevented by the most urgent necessities of employing my pen elsewhere. When my play[3] comes out, I shall be very happy to see him with you some evening if he will come up, & I will then discuss with him in what manner my /---/ name (such as it is) can best be made serviceable to the noble cause of popular education.
Ever truly yours, Leigh Hunt.
