Transcript	Hammersmith- Jany. 11th . My dear Carlyle , I should sooner have thanked you for your answer to my letter, had I not been waiting for that of Mr. Moran to my communication respecting the visit. He has been so ill, I am sorry to say, as to be confined to his bed, and unable to write; but I heard from him on Saturday. He rejoices in your willingness to see him, and adds: - “As my time, as well as his own, is much occupied now, I shall wait until May for the interview, when I trust his health will be unimpaired [page break] and his giant work accomplished. It seems to be distasteful to him, but like a true man, as he is, he is determined to go thro’ with it.” I grieve to find you so much out of sorts with your work, for I know how much that kind of perplexity must cost you. My only acquaintance with Frederick has been through the pages of his fellow-sufferer from the father’s stick, the Margravine of Bareith; of, in this instance, the implacable, and therefore, it is to be hoped, unwarrantable Voltaire; of poor servile Thiebault, whom I nevertheless remember thinking very credible and amusing; and lastly, poor bewildered “Mr. Physician” Zimmerman, who had such terrible work to undergo between the great man’s subjection to ragouts and his [page break] irritability at not being made well in spite of them. I have therefore sometimes fancied you would become perplexed with not knowing how to get real great greatness /not/ enough out of such a man, to please you; but concluded, that as you would know so much more about him in the course of your researches, you might set the world righter, and leave it in possession of a proper hero at last . To jump from great things to small, I am in a sort of like perplexity myself at present with a work of my own; for they are going to bring out a little play of mine at the theatre, in which the “star” of the place, and some defects incidental to lesser lights about him will conspire to give a prominence already more, I fear, than its due, to the part [page break] of a young officer of the old ultra-gallant French school; who, they tell me, in spite of my wishes to the contrary, will be the main cause of the piece’s success, -if it is to succeed at all; whereas I want to touch the progressive souls of people now-a-days with a serious portion of plot that lies underneath the levity of the rest of it. So the serious portion is to be diminished & kept as much as possible in the back ground, and my impudent young friend put proportionately before the lights. Which vexes me, and makes me regret to have made him so amusing! However, to save the pecuniary part of my conscience, I trust the moral will not altogether be lost. Perhaps damanation will cut short my perplexity ! Do not suppose I mean to take up any more of the time so precious to you, either by going to such a play, or by making a rejoinder to this reply. Neither, I do assure you, -and I am happy to think you will believe me, -is at all looked for, dear Carlyle, by Yours ever most truly , Leigh Hunt.
