Transcript	9bre. 14th. 1822. Dear M.— The letter is all very well – but I wish the he would press upon his brother [1] (what is of more importance at least to the quantity of the publication) the expediency of seeing Mr. Kd. [2] the moment he well enough to receive visitors – else he may never get the M.S.S. at all from Murray [3] – who seems to stick at nothing in all that relates to Hunt’s family. As to any expressions in private letters about Hunt or others [4] – I am not a cau= =tious letter=writer and generally say what comes uppermost at the moment, but I remember in my more deliberate Memoirs (which Murray bought of Moore) having done his character justice – why didn’t M. allude to them? – it were less a breach of confidence than the other? – – The whole thing has been a piece of officious Malice on the part of M. & not very discreet zeal on the part of Hunt’s friends. – yrs. ever N. B, P.S. I send you the completion of the first part – of the drama [5] – as I think it may be as well to divide it – although intended to be irregular in all it’s branches. Byron Oct 14th 1822 [6]
Transcript Notes	1. Leigh Hunt’s brother, John, Byron’s future publisher whom he had not met. 2. Leslie A. Marchand supplies Kinnaird’s name in his edition of Byron’s Letters and Journals, vol. 10 (Cambridge, Massachusetts: The Belknap Press of Harvard UP, 1980) 33. He notes as well that Kinnaird was injured in a fall from his horse. 3. As Byron’s relationship with his former publisher came to an acrimonious end, he requested several times of Kinnaird that the preface and corrected copy of the Vision of Judgment be given to John Hunt for future publication as well as his other prose pieces and unpublished papers. For a detailed account, see Andrew Nicholson ed., The Letters of John Murray to Lord Byron (Liverpool: Liverpool UP, 2007) 442-67. Kinnaird also had in his possession the unpublished Cantos 6 to 11 of Don Juan. Byron’s Memoirs were to remain in Murray’s possession. 4. In a previous letter to Leigh Hunt of October 11, 1822, Byron reports that he had described Mrs. Hunt as being “sick” and the children “not very tractable.” John Murray had shown to others private correspondence from Byron of Oct. 9, 1822, containing these unflattering comments. 5. Marchand notes here that the drama in question is the first draft of The Deformed Transformed which Mary Shelley transformed into a fair copy. 6. Byron uses the abbreviation for the ninth month of the Julian calendar, indicating that the composition of the letter was 14 November 1822. The date beside his signature must be in error, therefore, given the two-week period necessary for the delivery of letters referred to elsewhere in this letter.
