Transcript	5. York Buildings-New Road . 9th. April 1832 . Dear Sir , You would have heard from me sooner, & by another conveyance, but for a reason which I shall mention presently. Thanks, in the first place, for your reply to my letter. I have some manuscript by me, & connected with one of the subjects you mention,-the heathen mythology. It is part of a regular work upon fictitious beings of all kinds, especially the fabulous creatures of poetry & romance, giants, centaurs, flying women, &c. with all thereunto belonging; and I believe is of a comprehensive kind such as never has been published yet, certainly not in this country; but my friends tell me I must not send the chapters to a magazine under the price of articles written expressly for it, and I am not sure at this instant that I can dispose of it in that way, even if the proprietor of the magazine were inclined to have it. I was writing it for a house that has become bankrupt, & the affairs of which are in the hands of assignees. But this I could probably ascertain in the course of a few days, and you could see one of the articles if you liked . Meantime I regret extremely, that a press of work, in conjunction [Page Break] with my bad state of health, has prevented my writing any thing for your May number. I desired it much, & turned subjects in my head; but I could not find time by the sixth of the month. Next month I have every reason to believe, that I shall be able to manage it, and you may rely on my wish to do so. You may imagine how your first number has pleased one who agrees so heartily with its opinions, & has been so obliged by its kindness. I particularly like /the/ the leading article, the tête-à-tête, & the Ventilators:- but I have not read all the number yet. The author of the Ventilators has managed, with singular felicity, to mix up love & politics, so that each is the better for the other; & he can paint a real female, which is no common thing now-a-days. He knows how to unite real sweetness of nature with energy. Will you allow me to say that I think there should be a greater sprinkle of short prose articles and upon miscellaneous subjects? Politics are undoubtedly the great thing just now, & long may they continue to be so, for when truly great, they include thousands of other fine things;-but a magazine, I am sure, is the better for having a good deal of its ground broken up/on/ into smaller & more flowerey beds;[1] and the people in London have been complaining of the excess of politics in the New Monthly . Many thanks for the names you have sent me to forward my friend's kind purpose; and above all, thanks to the writer of the article on your page to correspondents. Pray be kind enough to tell him, that I feel deeply the force and [Page Break] delicacy of all that he has been pleased to say in behalf of my efforts, and that such notices [are] of vital service to me, even were nothing more to come of them than the good they do [my] heart . I have a subject in my head, connected with Scotland & its [ .] Would you like me to write upon that? I should like to have an answer to this [letter] in order to know that it has reached you. A note through your usual channel,-[ ] & Marshall,-would of course be in time for me; but as I hoped to be able to send [ ] something to the [ ],-which has delayed my present communication,-I have taken the liberty of paying the postage of it.
