Dear Sir,
You would have heard from me sooner, & by another conveyance, but for a reason which I shall mention presently. Thanks, in the first place, for your reply to my letter. I have some manuscript by me, & connected with one of the subjects you mention,-the heathen mythology. It is part of a regular work upon fictitious beings of all kinds, especially the fabulous creatures of poetry & romance, giants, centaurs, flying women, &c. with all thereunto belonging; and I believe is of a comprehensive kind such as never has been published yet, certainly not in this country; but my friends tell me I must not send the chapters to a magazine under the price of articles written expressly for it, and I am not sure at this instant that I can dispose of it in that way, even if the proprietor of the magazine were inclined to have it. I was writing it for a house that has become bankrupt, & the affairs of which are in the hands of assignees. But this I could probably ascertain in the course of a few days, and you could see one of the articles if you liked.
