Hampstead-13. Nov. 1815.
Sir,
My brother has sent me the request you made him by letter the other day respecting the essay on Hogarth in the Reflector; & I have only to say, as the organ & one of the proprietors of that work, that you are perfectly welcome to use it as you wish. -I must add however, with respect to the acknowledgment you propose to make of the publication in question, that the acknowledgment, most gratifying to us, would be that of the name of the author, who is M.r Charles Lamb of the India House.
I am, Sir,
Your very obedient hble. servant,
Leigh Hunt

| Transcript Notes |
The request mentioned in the following letter concerns the right to reprint Charles Lamb's "On the Genius and Character of Hogarth" which first appeared October 25, 1811, in No. 3 of the Reflector (Vol. II, pp. 61-77), of which Hunt was the organizer (this is the word intended) and one of the proprietors, John Hunt being the other. Hunt's desire to promote Lamb's literary career is evident here, and the essay did help to establish Lamb's reputation as a critic of discernment. Although the recipient is not mentioned in this letter, his identity is easily ascertainable as John Nichols (1745-1826), the first to reprint Lamb's essay, which duly appeared in The Genuine Works of William Hogarth (3 vols., 1808-17) by John Nichols and the late George Steevens, Vol. III (1817), pp. 57-86. Prefacing the essay is Nichols's graceful acknowledgment of The Reflector, of Mr. Leigh Hunt, and of Mr. Charles Lamb of the India House, in which some of Hunt's very words from this letter reappear. Nichols, a distinguished printer and antiquarian, edited the Gentleman's Magazine, 1792-1826, and was the uncle of publisher Richard Bentley (1794-1871) . |
