[London] July 15, 1801[1] Gentlemen , I have taken the Liberty of requesting the insertion of the following Poetical Attempts in your valuable Mirror.[2] If you have not room for them both, I beg you will lay one aside. Should you think proper to give me encouragement by putting them in your poetical Department, I hope I shall <not> in future not dishonour the Muse of your Miscellany. Permit me, Gentlemen, to return my acknowleagments for your flattering Critique on my Juvenile Trifles,[3] & to subscribe myself , Gentlemen, Your most obliged Servt . JHLHunt . [Page Break] 7. 1. It was the April 1801 Monthly Mirror review of LH's Juvenilia (London: J. Whiting, 1801) that apparently prompted this letter . 2. The two poems seem to have been "Song in Imitation of the Scotch Manner" which appeared in the Monthly Mirror for July 1801, (pp. 53-54) and "The Petition, Anacreontic" (Monthly Mirror, May 1802, pp. 353-54.) 3. Among other things the review of LH's Juvenilia said "[the volume] contains proofs of poetic genius, and literary ability, which reflect great credit on the youthful author, and will justify the most sanguine expectations of his future reputation." (Monthly Mirror, April 1801, p. 254.) |
