Transcript	Nice — June 1851 – Casa Quaglia My dear Leigh , I send you a few of our fruits to remind you of our sunny clime of which they are natives—With your poetic fancy, you will easily fall into a reverie of Citron & orange trees, & trellises of grapes, into such a bower we have nestled, surrounded by lovely mountainous views, & near the fresh breezes of the Mediterranean a mere cottage, just suited to the humble revenue of a retired artist. Your poor friend Vincent continues in a languid state, unable to work or enjoy himself yet thank God suffering no pain. Sabilla & myself have derived infinite benefit from this charming climate, & we only want a few friends to render [page break] the sojourn perfect: how often have I thought of you & fancied it was just the residence for one of your languid circulation, & Marianne's rheumatic affections; but I suppose there is no chance of your quitting England where you have so many friends & admirers: Society here is at a very low ebb, refined amusements few, all intellectual resources must depend upon home & self cultivation, which however pleasant would at times be enlivened by the visit of a cleverer friend, or a varied accomplishment—meantime we must not grumble,—we have our books, an excellent Piano, leisure, & such a climate & atmosphere as [page break] make all things delicious—even idleness becomes a luxury. If not asking too much, let me have a few lines from you, wh. if you will send to Craven Hill Cottage, Sabilla will bring with her on her return to Nice, in Augst. Remember me affectionately to Marianne & believe me dear Leigh ever your affectionate friend Mary Sabilla Novello
Transcript Notes	Hunt's old friends Mary and Vincent Novello retired to Nice (then Italian) in 1849. Mrs. Novello died there five years later. Vincent survived Leigh Hunt. Sabilla (1821-1904), who accompanied them, was their youngest daughter . Hunt's reply to this letter, dated August 4, appears in the Cowden Clarkes' Recollections of Writers, pp. 257-258. It was enclosed in an August 5 cover letter to Mrs. Clarke, which Luther Brewer prints in The Holograph Letters, p. 260 .
