Sir,
The letter which you had the goodness to write to me, I received yesterday. It gave me great pleasure; & perhaps you will receive some little in return, when I tell you, that I never believed this report, & that I always made a point of expressing my conviction to the contrary. Lisson Grove North 10. Feb. 1818. Sir , The letter which you had the goodness to write to me, I received yesterday. It gave me great pleasure; & perhaps you will receive some little in return, when I tell you, that I never believed this report, & that I always made a point of expressing my conviction to the contrary. As to the libel in question,—I have my infirmities as well as others,—& I have also [page break] some opinions, not very common perhaps, in morals as well as politics; but my opinions, right or wrong, are founded upon principle; the only just cause of disquiet I am conscious of ever having given to others has arisen from a bad habit of delay & from inattention to business; and as to insinuating that I am a seducer & that I lead my wife a wretched existence, the poor creature might as well have said that I laid traps for my visitors, or rode up & down stairs on horseback, or did any other thing equally im- [page break] possible & fantastic. But pardon me, Sir, for being led away by a kind movement on your part into this piece of self-vindication or self-love. I admire, and (if you will allow me to say as much) congratulate you on the feelings that prompted you to it; and am very sincerely Your obliged & obed.t serv.t Leigh Hunt. To Horace Twiss Esqre. |
| Transcript Notes | Horace Twiss (1787-1849), the nephew of the actress Sarah Siddons, at the time of this exchange with Leigh Hunt was even better known as a writer of society verses and of witty newspaper squibs than as a lawyer on the Oxford circuit. He served in the House of Commons, 1820-31, becoming under-secretary for war and the colonies in the government formed by the Duke of Wellington in 1828. Connected with the Times in the 1830s, he originated the useful practice of writing summaries of Parliamentary debates. |
