Dear Mr. Moxon A few words you let fall made me reflect & look over some notes I made. And the spirit moves me to put together a journal of my late tour which may & [?] afford scope – Many /fals/ facts of experiences I can tell which will be useful – but above all – my 8 weeks tour brought me many compliments & my present twelvemonths tour will, I feel sure, procure me receiving more. This sounds vain, but is not. I distrust myself and often lose advantages natural to me thro' this distrust – the 8 weeks tour – & among my novels Lodore – were written off hand & have pleased most – I mean therefore to make my present work /light/ as light – as personal to myself – & as amusing as I can. I think you will like it as a reader – as a publisher I hope it will meet your approbation. I am working fast – but then I work best – since fast ever comes with me from the inspiration of & pleasure I take in the subject I told you I wanted money – not for myself – but for a purpose most urgent & desirable I want it – I shall work fast therefore – & I hope you will prepare to receive the offered Ms. graciously & generously – as usual. – Ever truly yr Mary Shelley Putney – 28/7/8 Sep. |
