Vincent Leigh Hunt Esqr . 3 Bath Place , L. H . Peckham. [page break] [Kensington, August 1st. 1850] I have thought of little but Cardinomia since I saw you; so much indeed that for that very reason the finale proceeds slowly, I think so intensely of every note, while revising it. Paton has most excellently drawn symbol & capital letter with it; but I had forgotten to ask him to draw only a symbolical, not a real heart; and [page break] he has done the latter, & so I must take him at his generous word, & get him to draw again.- But I must hasten lest I again lose the post . Ever most loving father , L. H . |

"Cardinomia" was the title Hunt originally had in mind for the revision of his devotional work, Christianism (1832), which became The Religion of the Heart. Vincent did not live to see its publication . There is no symbolical heart to be found decorating the cover or the title page of the 1853 volume. The Paton mentioned here was Joseph Noel Paton (1821-1900; knighted 1867), a Scottish history painter, illustrator, and poet associated with the Pre-Raphaelites who was known first for the folkloric, then for the religious character of his works; his two most famous paintings depict Oberon and Titania; another is of The Death of Paolo and Francesca. He had begun his artistic career by contributing to S. C. Hall's Book of British Ballads (1842) and to Hall's Art Journal in 1843, and in Retrospect of a Long Life (New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1883), p. 189, Hall pays tribute to Paton's talents and high-mindedness. Mary Shelley, to whom the artist dedicated his Compositions from Shelley's Prometheus (1844), evidently introduced him to Hunt (see Letters of Mary Wollstoncraft Shelley, ed. Betty T. Bennett, Vol. III p. 162) . This note was published, with minor variations and the omission of a line, in the Correspondence, II, p. 129, and by A. N. L. Munby in Letters to Leigh Hunt from His Son Vincent, p. 44, in both places being dated "Kensington, August 1st [1850]." Vincent's reply of August 2nd, 1850, also mentions Paton's drawing. Hunt more clearly describes the heart decoration and the "prayer-book character" he sought for his religious volume in a letter of August 15 [1853], probably to John Chapman, which appears in The Holograph Letters, pp. 388-389. |
