Transcript	Mercury Office Northampton Aug: 18 1851 My Dear Sir, I have forwarded your letter to Dalby. His present address is Handoke, Newport [?Rapid], Bucks. I fear he is a long way from the chalk districts, for Handoke is on the borders of this County where there is nothing of the kind. But I should think there would be little difficulty in finding the accommodation you require at either Watford or Berkhampstead which are both on the London & North-Western Rail & not beyond twenty miles from London. A few weeks ago I was in a country which I should conceive to be admirably adapted to your object, with the exception possibly of being somewhat too far from Town. The eastern part of Hampshire, from Potsdown Hill to Farnborough Station is I believe all chalk-at least one sees chalk cropping out in every direction, & a walk through a nearby ploughed field not only certifies your title to "double pie-crust", but might lead also to the supposition that you had assisted at the Kneading. The climate too is milder than that of either Harts or Bucks. In picturesque trained beauty I know of few places more excelling. Hills or rather Cliffs, & deep Dells or rather precipices abound, clothed with trees so thickly that you ascend & descend with the facility of an opossum. They call these wooded slopes "Hangers." Gilbert White's garden at Selbourne is bounded by a noble specimen, & if his House were but to let I imagine it would suit you thoroughly-"older than new" and "quaint with straggling rooms." A more beautiful wall, affording a more blissful sense of perfect seclusion than this "Hanger" it is hard to imagine. Then in the neighbourhood are Commons, with plenty of fern & golden [?ginse] & gorgeously purple heath. I am grieved to hear of the cause of your proposed migration, although I believe that the migration itself may be greatly beneficial to you all. I know your son only through the two Sonnets which have appeared in the two last Atheneums; but through them it is impossible not to feel that he more than deserves what you have said of him. His last Sonnet (which I hope to have the pleasure of transferring to the Mercury of next Saturday) is very beautiful & full of the true Leigh-Hunt spirit. Out of the love I bear to his father I hope to be entitled to a shake of the hand from him one of these days. Believe me my dear Sir, Ever with sincere esteem & affection Yours G. G. De Wilde-
