My dear Mr Leigh Hunt,
One of the humblest, but one also of the most devoted of your admirers begs to send you his delighted congratulations on the success of your "Lovers' Amazements". I have only just now seen that cordial & excellent notice of it in my Examiner. Of course there must have been something about it in the Times, but somehow or other it escaped me. Mercury Office Northampton Jan: 26 1858 My dear Mr Leigh Hunt , One of the humblest, but one also of the most devoted of your admirers begs to send you his delighted congratulations on the success of your “Lovers’ Amazements”. I have only just now seen that cordial & excellent notice of it in my Examiner. Of course there must have been something about it in the Times, but somehow or other it escaped me. There was a time when there was little chance of anything connected with [page break] the theatres escaping me but I have lived so long out of the reach of them that it is only now & then that I hear their echo . May I venture to say that nobody has sympathized more deeply than I have done in your recent heavy sorrows, though – (whether with reason or not I scarcely know) – I feared that I should be guilty of something like irreverence if I abounded my sympathy upon you. I feared too to do anything to irritate a wound which time only could soothe. Nor can anybody rejoice more sincerely & more heartily to hear of anything that is likely to benefit & to gladden you. Ungrateful indeed I should be if I did [page break] not feel the most earnest interest in all that concerns you, for you are my most constant companion. I go to you incessantly for cheerfulness, & sunshine, & unworldliness, & a healthy morality & I always come away happier & better for the visit . Are you writing now in any Periodical; & if so, in what? If the question is an impertinent one pray forgive it & take no notice of it . Believe me Yours ever, most sincerely & affectionately G.J. De Wilde |
