Transcript	20 /---/ [ ? ] St Dublin, Jany 6, 1851 My dear Sir I believe you will remember my name although it is so long since I had the pleasure to meet you that you probably could not now recognize my face. I take great interest in the literary prospects of a friend here who will forward you a packet under the signature M.N. May I bespeak your attention it? I am glad to see the Journal on foot, & read with continued avidity your own Moralia: next to those of Plutarch the most agreeable essays I know of. You to Indicator left a relish that makes most modern miscellanies [page break] insipid. I happened on a copy of it some time since at the house of a friend in the country, & plainly thought I saw Dickens & Browning in their candles. The gentile contributions however, in the Journal, are an /---/ incongruous company. Yet Allingham’s is a bright genius, & the chirping of his notes, & the sight of the weeds under the ice, delight the inner ear and eye. What I wish chiefly to say, however, about your poetical contributions is the commendation of L.O. I have nowhere met modern versification with more of the verve of Dryden, although I am sure the writer had neither Dryden nor any other master before him. I am very glad to see any one going back to the old wholesome positive school of poetry; for these Tennysonian obliquities are, after all, mere undertone gammon. Pardon my dogmatism. I have been taking occasional opportunities of saying the same in the University Magazine here. I was [page break] able to say something just, and which I hope may prove useful, on Allingham’s behalf in the “University” lately, & took the same occasion to express the good will I have long felt towards yourself. You will perhaps be surprised at my having done nothing beyond some minor poems which you noticed many years ago. We have been so bedeviled in various ways here, of late years, that we have little heard for anything but resentments. I vented my rage just before the erection of our Incumbered Estates Court in a prophetic invective of which I shall send you a copy along with some other matters which will show you the turn my mind has taken under the influence of these coercive times. I write to you so much in the spirit of an old friend that I cannot resist the desire to tell you further that I am married about [page break] two years, & so happy that, if our prayers for children are granted, I could hardly evidence my gratitude by being any happier. I am also in that stage of professional progress in which a man is said to be a rising young lawyer (of 40!). Furthermore, I have got a good status among my fellow townsmen, & am on the whole wonderfully well off for one who was a poet and is an Irishman. I wish we could get you over here. We are not so starved and wicked as you think us. Nobody will take you for a land agent, and even if they did, they never shoot landlords or agents in this county -of a city. Come, & I’ll borrow you a steel shirt, & you shall smile on the drawn trigger and defy its slug. No, but seriously & in good faith & will & shall be most happy to see you here if you should come to Ireland. Meanwhile believe me ever faithfully yours Saml. Ferguson Leigh Hunt Esq
