Charter House
March 29. 1843
My dear Mary Anne
I really feel ashamed that I have not called upon you or taken any notice of you for so long a time. As soon as I got my nomination to the Charter House, my time was taken up with processing several certificates which were necessary before I could be admitted. The one which gave me the greatest difficulty was to prove legally that I was fifty years of age. I was afraid that I would have to send /to Liverpool/ my old Family Bible to Liverpool to get my brother Samuel or my niece Anne, now Mrs. Foger Gaskell, to prove before /---/ a magistrate my father's handwriting in the Bible in which he has written the names & ages of all his children.
