One Oclock
My dearest Love,
I am afraid I am sadly transgressing now in delaying to answer you so long; but when you know the cause you will forgive me. You must know then that I have been more anxious than usual. Thornton (who has been far from well sometime) was all yesterday till about 4 oclock very unwell indeed & then he was then seized with such violent pains that I was quite alarmed, they continued acute in the extreme till at last I could bear it no longer, & sent for Mr Allan. (I thought it was inward inflammation arising from cold upon the salts, (in consequence of his over delicacy, which is very dangerous, however pleasant it is to see, in any one you regard.) & this morning Mr Allan tells me he has no
