My dear Mr. Payne
I must ask you to accept my apologies for not having sooner answered your letter.
The account you give of the result of your correspondence with Mr John Hogg is very satisfactory. I am afraid though it will be next season at the earliest before the 3d vol. comes out.
I certainly agree with you that an illustrated edition of my father's

Boscombe, Christchurch, Hants May 26 1864 My dear Mr. Payne I must ask you to accept my apologies for not having sooner answered your letter. The account you give of the result of your correspondence with Mr John Hogg is very satisfactory. I am afraid though it will be next season at the earliest before the 3d vol. comes out. I certainly agree with you that an illustrated edition of my father’s poems would be a very desirable thing to bring out, and the great probability is that such a book would sell well, especially if Gilbert was engaged to do the drawings. At the same time I have no spare cash to risk in speculation of any kind. Therefore all I can give you is my best wishes if you proceed with such a scheme. Lady Shelley is in town, but the whole of her time is taken up with nursing our little niece who was badly burnt by her sleeve catching alight about three weeks ago. If it were not for this I would ask you to call on her and hear what she has to say on the subject of an illustrated edition. As it is however she is not able to attend to anything. When the child gets better, lf possible before leaving London, she will call on you no doubt. Believe me yours very faithfully Percy Shelley |
