Carburton Street, Tuesday 1/2 past 7.
[1 May?] [?October 2 or 9][1] 1810.
My dearest girl,
We arrived safely yesterday in spite of two enormous old ladies in the coach, who instead of apologizing to us all for their illegal proportion of seat, looked as if they were angry at each other for having such dimensions. Last night I drank tea with Haydon, [1] & today am going with Mr. Hunter [2] directly after breakfast into the city, where I plunge over head & /---/ ears into books till dinner, which I take with him at Saint Paul's Church Yard. Tomorrow ditto, the theatre in the evening. My limbs are as well as they were but not better, though Mrs. Hunter [3] rubbed my hands last night; I believe I shall get no good for them till I return. Mrs. Hunter sends her kind love to yourself and the little boy, Mr. Hunter his dear love, and Miss Kent[4] her love; and as to myself, I kiss & bless you both a thousand times. Pray take care how you go about the house this damp weather.
Your affectionate husband,
Leigh Hunt.

| Transcript Notes |
1. Written after Thornton was born September 10, 1810 and before LH left Beckenham in December 1810. The letter mentions attending the theater on Wednesday. According to the critiques in The Examiner, the only two Wednesdays LH attended the theater in the fall of 1810 were October 2 when he saw Coleman, the elder, and Garrid's The Clandestine Marriage and October 10 when he saw Arthur Murphy's The Way to Keep Him. Thus the date of this letter would seem to be either October 2 or 9, 1810 . 2. Benjamin Robert Haydon . 3. Rowland Hunter . 4. Thornton Hunt, first child of Leigh and Marianne Hunt . 5. Elizabeth Kent . |
