Wednesday
My dear Hunt
I fully relied on seeing you yesterday, and, with that reliance, promised to call on Mr. Manisty again, with whom I had an interview in the morning.-What course to take I really do not know.-Mr. Manisty startled me very much by telling me he considered the proposal respecting the creditor had failed, because the money, the sum necessary, was not now ready. I told him, as you will recollect, from the very first, that all I could do at the expiration a severe engagement of business, would be, by enquiries, to satisfy myself, if possible, that the money could be collected at all.-If he had proposed what he now speaks of, I would at once have scouted the possibility of it. Now what I promised, though at some risk of interfering awkwardly with the other & far more important project on foot, I have performed, since I have no doubt whatever, from one or two conversations I have had with our friend, that he shall be able to get the money together.
Immediately, is out of the question. I never dreamt of such a thing. Jeffrey was written to on Saturday last, & the Memorial sent on Monday. No time is now being lost in anything. Meantime,

Wednesday My dear Hunt I fully relied on seeing you yesterday, and, with that reliance, promised to call on Mr. Meantime, my dear Hunt, I wish to God I could relieve you from the present pain, but indeed, unless Mr.Manisty can be prevailed on, I do not see any way. I will go up to him this morning, before 12 o'clock, and speak to him. If it accomplishes anything, you will of course immediately hear. If theworst" comes, however, I am by no means certain that it will turn out to be the worst. It is because I know you feel sharply some incidents attached to it, that I feel them also & will do my best with Mr.Manisty,-otherwise I have no doubt that its influence on our general hopes & intentions would be far from painful. I would come over to you in this strait, but I was at the printing office correcting proofs till nearly 3 this morning & am going back there as soon as I have done some thing on the Ex.-I have also an engagement at 1 & 2 of a very unpleasant [nature]. Ever my dear Hunt most affectionately yours J. F. |
