Dear Sir,
If this Prospectus[1] (modestly speaking) doesn't do, the devil is in your project, & it oughtn't to do. I worked upon it to no purpose yesterday evening, tumbling about, as it were, among dry bricks; & truth to say, getting a horrid fear of said dryness, & that the objection was insurmountable; but this morning in bed, the

Kensington. 12 min. to 2. Nov. 11. [1840] Dear Sir , If this Prospectus[1] (modestly speaking) doesn't do, the devil is in your project, & it oughtn't to do. I worked upon it to no purpose yesterday evening, tumbling about, as it were, among dry bricks; & truth to say, getting a horrid fear of said dryness, & that the objection was insurmountable; but this morning in bed, the [page break] whole thing flowed into my brain, as smooth & as clear as oil; so I hope you will speed. You will see however what I thought fit to add, (in article six) and I certainly feel very strongly, (whether I have to write in the work or not,--and my time will be well filled up at all events) that without a very cordial attention to that part of the attraction, & a good careful sprinkle of it throughout, the horrible instinct of the bookseller will turn out [page break] to be right, & the work die of drought. Makers of business are thirsty things; which is the reason why aldermen eat & drink so much, & lawyers are so given to jests behind their briefs . Yours truly , Leigh Hunt . Many thanks for the seals . P.S. I open the note to say, that what with /making/ finishing a copy of the Prospectus & other fidgetments, /the/ your messenger will not have got away till nearly half past 2. |
