My dear Hunt , We have been making some changes in the Atlas during the last fortnight which have engrossed so much time that I have had no instant for anything else. I owe you some notes, and more apologies for not writing sooner, - but trust, as ever, as to your unfailing toleration . First, I have instituted enquiries in my neighbourhood for such a bowery retreat as you speak of, but have not yet succeeded, nor do I think you will get exactly what you want. Pleasant small houses there are enough, in country situations, too, but with others abutting upon them, & spoiling all thought of a green solitude, - such as I know you want. But the weather is now clearing, & I will look farther for you, & do not doubt of [page break] finding something near your ideal . You will be shocked to find your Article this week cut in two. The deed was inevitable, & was not carried into operation without many a pause. In looking over the paper - now printed - you will see a hundred things that might have been better spared: so do I. But the exigencies of a paper at the 11th. hour are suggestive of very different considerations. The rest of the paper appears of course [page break] next week. But I must ask you not to let any of your movements in these matters interfere with your progress. Give us your article as usual weekly, & we will go on with it as fully & regularly as possible. The absorbing interest & direful encroachments of Parliament compel us to sacrifices every moment then, for which we have only this consolation that every other journal is exposed to the same contingencies . Believe me Ever, my dear Hunt, Yours Faithfully , Robert Bell Saturday 27. Feby |
