Transcript	Aug. 20th- I wrote “Alls Well” outside my very dear Friend, to save you the pang ^as you opened it of thinking you would be expected in your kindness to write any answer- I have felt very anxious about your health- ie the effect of this glorious though overwhelmingly warm weather: on the other hand hopeful that it had agreed with you, as it has with us all or I should not have left home- even though to pay this visit a 39 times repeated one the last 39 years of my life of course to honest & love & warm-hearted friends- of whom I shall say a word or two more before I sign my name, as I think you may be amused to hear of people as singular as the place they live in; a Country Town it is, not a village [page break] once had a market has a Town Hall & a Country Court- Its streets or thorough-fares all wide & clear- No squalid poverty- rising from humble yet cheerful cottages gradually, through ^& up to every degree of comfortable residences- No large houses but this I write from, & the Parsonage on Elizabethan & Gentlemanly residence-and that’s all I shall say- It is a curious contrast to the actual unsocial, ^habits yet harmonious feelings of the Inhabitants. Of my Friends, a mother & grown up sons & daughters. I will only say- They are all handsome, musical, artistic, honest strait forward- ^taciturn living to themselves & [page break] the Friends ^of their Parents & descendents of those friends- never having been known- to court an acquaintance in their lives- Their mother laughingly says, “When we have friends to dinner I hear only the clatter of the knives & forks but no conversation, talking rather,” but their taciturnity is neither stern nor stupid, a ready smile of intelligence & a few words in the most full and sweet tones respond always- But to me, the charm of their music is so deep in my soul, I never speak of it to anyone but my sisters & now to you for I am sure you would were you present entirely sympathise-Twilight-Baslume [page break] is the light in which I most enjoy music- Sometimes old glees such as “Winde Gentle Evergreen” &c sung on the lawn ^in the evening. Their mother & I sitting within the opened glass doors- Last evening- Mendelsohm- & Gluck & the likes with the best beloved of all “Pestal”- One effect of hearing & enjoying music on my mind is an over-aweing sense of reverence, gratitude & responsibility- To be allowed to have the spirit touched with the voice from a higher world! -My dear Friend, you will I know pardon the trouble of reading this ill put together letter & take as God knows it is- an inexpressible gratification & indulgence
