Transcript	[Oxford ?May 4, 1803][1] My dear love , I have a thousand thanks to Mrs. H[unter] for her tender sollicitude: a sollicitude I should have been anxious to do away long before to day, but I delayed writing in the hourly expectation of finding a sudden turn in my illness, as I did not wish to communicate unpleasant news. This day however I should have certainly written, as I began last night to be considerably better and was so well this morning that I sailed on the river Isis in company with two or three gentlemen. I have received a letter from home, where all is well; but I shall not mention a word of my illness to my father, tho' I mean to inform my brother John; (to whom I shall write tomorrow and who knows when to be secret); my mother who is apt to be affected on very slight causes would be too much alarmed; and [Page Break] it is for this reason that I may probably delay my journey to London till the middle of next week: I should wish to appear before her in all my usual health and spirits. If however I mend as fast as I have done yesternight and this morning, I shall no doubt be in town on Saturday evening and shall have the pleasure of seeing your fireside on Sunday.-- I am vexed with myself that I wrote any thing about this confounded little cold.--Adieu, my dearest girl; think of me as cheerfully as you do affectionately, for I assure you that I am getting well as fast as possible; I should never forgive myself for causing you a moment's uneasiness, and I hope to God I never shall. Remember me affectionately to Mr. H[unter] Sophy and Betsy.-- Papendieck begs me to tell Mrs. H. that he should have had the pleasure of answering that lady's letter if I had not done it so satisfactorily, and that he has no doubt but that I shall be as well in a day or two as Mrs. H., himself, or above all her [Page Break] amiable daughter (he says I must put his very words) can wish. I would not have sent you this half of a letter, but I write rather uneasily from a shaking of the hand which I have had for some days, but which is now almost entirely abated.- I have never been to bed, but have contented myself with lying by the fire side and drinking broth and gruel: as for a physician; I thank you a thousand times for your care, but I thank Heaven I a[m no]t[2] mad enough yet to shake hands with Death. Transcript Notes	1. LH could not have received an answer to his letter of April 26 from Mrs. Hunter before April 28, a Thursday. LH says he may be in town Saturday evening so he could not have written later in the week than Friday, but since he says he has delayed writing Mrs. Hunter for several days, this letter must have been written in the next week probably on Wednesday May 4 which would give him time to mend before returning to town on Saturday. 2.
