Transcript	14 Brunswick Terrace Brighton Oct. 25 1869/ My dear Mr. Mayer , I received your letter on Saturday evening, forwarded from office by my chief; who very likely missed it on Friday evening. I am here, with his father, Mr. J.M. Levy, /until/ for some 8 or 10 days longer. I had out pen & paper to write to you yesterday; but found that I was too late for post, which earlier on Sunday I had written home, just in time for post, when I discovered my mistake -caused by misinformation- & I slipped your note in for Walker to read; telling him that I was /---/ writing to you by same post . I am sorry that anything should have secured to vex you. I did not happen to see that to which /---/ you [page break] refer, I therefore cannot follow what you say. But I shall by to get it . I was meaning to write to you on Wednesday, -on the Tuesday evening I had to make up smears, & it was a tight drive. But on the Wednesday a most /not/ unforeseen state of pressure; & then again on Thursday; & when I came here it was with a mess of letters /---/ not yet conquered; so that I have been at my usual work in my private affairs - procrastinating . I have not yet thanked you for your share in the Memorial, the success of which, to my mind, beyond all expectation. The Tuesday was capitally managed. The whole achievement puts us, the family, under the deepest obligations to you. I wrote to Lord Houghton, thanking him, perhaps [page break] I should write also to Mr. S.C. Hall. But ablatâ causâ cessat effectas-ablato Mayero /abest/ abest monumentum. The man to whom our thanks are due is Townshend Mayor. I do thank you from my heart . What you propose to add on the tablet seems to me excellent. When must it be done ? Give my kindest regards to Mrs. Mayer. As the daughter of one of my Father’s old friends, I am inclined to ask her to help me to thank you; but at least I have an impression that that the very faculties which make you so intent on good work have enabled you to draw from that source a large & blessed portion of your reward . I am, my dear Mr. Mayer most gratefully yours Thornton Hunt . I forget your [?christian] name [page break] proper, I recall only what I may call your gentile /---/ name; so forgive imperfect address.
