Transcript	23d- Feb 7- My dear Friend Have you read “The Warden” A novel in one Volume by Antony Trollope Have you read any of the Revd Arthur Mursell’s sermons to Working Men preached in the Free Trade Hall at Liverpool sold at a penny a piece 15 Piccadilly but I must lend you one or two to read that you may follow your own fancy if you take any- I have never longed so intensely to have a talk with you (though ^it is always one way almost my best pleasure when I do enjoy it) as /within/ the last fortnight. Since the Hierarchy bristled up with fear & most unhappy anticipations when a revision of the Liturgy was proposed their argument their only proffered one /a/ against it! you saw was the fear that such a great number of Protestant Christians would object In other words all the crafty- weak & ignorant of their congregations- and added what made up the perfection of their untruth and even hypocrisy-That such a multitude of petitions would they were assured be offered against any change No doubt all the people who dissented wd [page break] and millions more for a penny a piece would consent to sign or if they could not write have their hands guided- The first sentence in “The Exhortation” is a blasphemy, setting up their scripture ‘in divers and sundry places’ calling to repentance instead of that awful & most salutary presence of God in the soul called conscience- The vulgar repetitions, too, of the obsolete diction; the psalms- the language of the heart of humanity- prayer praise adoration &c Oh what beautiful up/eries/crys- to Heaven. If selected & only one psalm if long, two if short- Reads & ^read to perfection by the Clergyman Chapters carefully selected & adapted & read to perfection No vague absurd psalms no vague useless immoral indecent lessons- But I must stop I have not expressed myself well I know Would to God, some bale heart & soul & understanding would thoroughly repose the wickedness that has buried the germs of salvation beneath the rubbish of priestcraft- I think the term “Church,” means Idolatry- Worldliness pride /---/ cant & priestcraft, with some smaller in proportion but pure & powerful religion- But a larger proportion would [page break] the Idolatry &c &c &c which ^have composed hitherto a church. My reverence admiration & love for the character and the wonderful words of Jesus Christ are, I thank God evermore encreasing, & the comfort of my life But if He & His disciples were not to come on Earth the two Great Churches Catholic & Protestant He would never enter- I make no apology for what I have troubled you to read nor the imperfections of the language. I would if I were to begin life again be a Quaker if I could have power to introduce sacred music of the most solemn & tender- A Friend, the aunt of Mrs. Hennelt (How I loved and admired Charles Hennelt!) She is now Mrs. Call Mr Call a most estimable and gifted young man) has asked me for your Autograph- I will not part with any letter I have of yours- I have very few- I am now /much/ very much in the habit of preparing for the end of my life- But if you would terminate the next note you are so kind to write to me on the 3d- page of the paper- a few kind words and some thing about “Shakespeare & the Musical Glasses” if you like that with your noble fair clear signature will satisfy both her & me [page break] Have your pretty children any fancy do you think for painting any uncoloured engravings they may have in their fable or story books pray let me know. I found a paper the other day which contained a good many and cakes of blue red green &c &c- I want to give to children to amuse themselves with- All best wishes- respects & love apreciation attend you from hence- Ever- My dear Friend , Yr /---/ affec [ ? ] E N James . It will be a great trial to me to read your play I shall want to speak to you every moment- One more book or pamphlet I must send you mine if you have not got it- “Notes on Noses” It is neither satirical not farcical but very good remarks & information- & moreover productive of much amusement as well
