Transcript	My dear Hunt/ I wrote your Brother, stating that you had said I was not considered, by his family as punctual in money matters. I begged his answer, and he sends me the following; the original of which I shall keep for my own justification. -- "Dear Haydon/ I don't know who /has/ could have done you this wrong, all that I can say is, that I have never found you most careful in fulfilling your pecuniary engagements, and that I have the fullest reliance on your punctuality in such matters &c. John Hunt I said to him/ Do you consider me a man who would stand by my Friend in time of adversity to the risk of my own destruction -- he /said/ answered? -- I am sure of it-- Did you ever find inclined to scandal or paltry tattle? -- never was his reply -- Having thus the opinion of one for whom I have with many others an enthusiastic regard it is to me a matter of perfect indifference what you or Mrs. Hunt think --- I have thus proved you the dupe of calumny in one instance, cannot you suppose you may have been so in others? -- I can assure you, you are, and that the assertion of my never coming to see you for six months in Prison is as great a falsehood as that I was not punctual in money matters with your Brother John --- For these seven Years past I have been honored by the sneers of Mrs. Hunt, every body has told me of them, from your oldest friend to the newest acquaintances and have asked me the reason! I never gave one, tho perfectly aware they proceeded from my having resisted an attempt of your wife and her mother to entrap me into a marriage with Miss Kent-- Mrs. Hunter's letter I have yet, and Mrs. Hunt's speeches I well remember, and it is not the most unlikely thing in the World, that a man should ever after [?burthen] a Woman's remembrance, when he has proved that her powers, however displayed, was not totally irresistible -- to all those persons whom I have been spoken of disrespectfully /of/ by Mrs. Hunt [page break] I shall make a point, whenever the subject is again alluded to, of explaining every fact connected with this matter -- It was always irksome to me to visit your family after that transaction, and I have ever endeavored by every minor attention to soften the anger I saw but ill concealed, whenever I was present -- You were mean enough [1] last night to tell me, that the obligations were all on my side - I deny it- you lent me 45- told me to pay you when I could, and yet harrassed [sic] me for it in the middle of a great work, I knew you were tormented-- but don't talk of your forbearance after this- I lent you my name for 160 in other little matters I will be be [sic] mean enough to tell you that the obligations all lie on your side, and that I have never ceased to present you with sketches, prints &&c.-- which you received not as they were meant, as sincere token of a/n/ reciprocal affection, but with an air of affectation, as if they were only the just taxes of duty; when did you ever think of me in such little matters? when did you ever think of my art, as I have thought of your pleasures? In France or in England, I never ceased accumulat/ed/ing little gratifications for you -- I wrote you letters which you never answered, I visited you ten times, to your once, I came out to Hampstead ill in my eyes, unable to read or draw by night and yet not once did you ever offer to come over & spend an evening, to read to me, to alleviate my anxieties!/---- ----/--no, no, Hunt I have found out what all old Your Friends have found out, that you are a Man totally absorbed in yourself, whose perceptions have actually been deadened by the pernicious flattery of humble adorers, and that with the continual expressions of /geniality/ geniality, Forbearance, & Friendship on your lips, you would have suffered your own Brother to go to Prison, if others had displayed as little feeling as yourself-- This is a serious matter, our old Friendship on the point of dissolving, prophetically speaks, I am agitated while I write-- I was and am now so thoroughly disgusted with your conduct then, that you [?snick] for war -- and nothing that you can ever do will ever in my mind raise you to the pitch of affection I once had for you -- I now take my leave of you, for I have no longer pleasure in your presence. I wish you every future prosperity, but you must alter your whole system to attain it, or depend on it you will go out of the World the victim of the poisonous flattery you daily enhale, [sic] with the contempt of your enemies, and the sorrow of your Friends Yours with affectionate remembrance B R Haydon You need not answer this-- Dec. 31. 1817-
