Thursday [?Evg] My dear Hunt I write to rectify a word in my note of today. I said, I feared there was now no remedy with regard to the income tax-- which will certainly not be repealed-- I was thinking of the £120 per ann. But I recollect that we pay the tax on that sum-- so that it is not to be accounted in your income (we never paid any tax on what Sir Tim allowed us-- & yours stands in the same category)--so that, as I cannot help believing that you have not been in the receipt latterly of £150 per ann. I think you may save to your family a sum /for/ which legally you have no call to pay. Pray understand that the £120 is not to be twice paid for . Very truly yours , M.S. Friday morning. I have been talking with Percy-- & have settled that I must manage to send you £10 on account of what you will receive when our affairs are settled-- but till they are settled your creditors must wait. And pray, dear Hunt, do not put this down as income-- presents from friends are not income |
