My dear Hunt -
I am here in London - alone - helpless - & hopeless, unless you will come & cheer me up a little this evening. I wrote to ask Forster to dine with me to day at six o'clock. /to day/. He will come - if you (whom I told him I should tempt - with an apple or two - ) will come. I got his letter late last

13 Upper Harley Street Cavendish Square Sunday, October 10 My dear Hunt - I am here in London - alone - helpless - & hopeless, unless you will come & cheer me up a little this evening. I wrote to ask Forster to dine with me to day at six o’clock. /to day/. He will come - if you (whom I told him I should tempt - with an apple or two - ) will come. I got his letter late last night, giving me your address - (which I could not lay hands on.) Now, my dear Hunt - you used to be an amiable man - indeed I may say a brisk careless devil may care fellow - who would eat a chop at a friends house, on an emergency like the present. What can you do, but come on the present occasion? Your character, as it appears to me, is at stake; & England (or the public) expects every man to do his duty particularly yourself - - If you say ‘yes’ - (by the bearer, who waits for ‘yes’ & will not in fact bring ‘No’) - I will call you at 5 o’clock & bring you here. There will be nobody but you & I & Forster - a couple of soles - or soals (or souls - which is the right thing?) - some mutton chops & a roasted fowl. I say nothing about any sparkling Burgundy because I wish to surprize you, a little. Waiting your answer I am (or am not - as the case may be) yours very truly , B. W. Procter |
