Transcript	Kensington—Dec. 9th. [?1840] My dear Sir , This book comes to you so late, that of course any use of it in your own book is out of the question, even had it fallen within the scope of its feasibilities: nor indeed, when I [page break] again saw the plate of the Valle deila [?]Donni (p.221), could I have desired it, the artist, in restoring the place to its Boccacciosity, having made it so different from what it now is by the introduction of those two great castellated piles of stone , [page break] which take all the sweet taste of the vines & olives out of one's mouth. All which I might have begged for, would have been <the Cloister / a portion of the side, including the Cloister of the Doccia; / / which remains [?]as there represented. It is seen all over that part of the country, & was the object I had [page break] before me from my window while translating Redi's Bacchus in Tuscany & writing the Christianism. My village, Maiano, where Boccaccio's father possessed a house, I take to be indicated by the tenement or two on the opposite side of the picture, facing, the Doccia. The Doccia (a dissolved convent, so called from its being the Water spout of the stream below) was my daily walk, where I used to sit & read under the cypresses, & look down on Florence in the valley about three miles off.— I send you the book just to look at & send me [page break]-continued on top of first page back again,—owning, but not believing in, just the barest possible hope of a bit of a vignette . [page break] /"Italy"/ "Italy" must be my excuse . Your obliged & faithful Leigh Hunt . If those two great intermediate houses were taken away, & the piece of water is filled up with a field, the scene would be very like what it is now. This really might have made a picture for your book . William Howitt Esqr . Clapton . With a Book.
