Figure WILLIAM B. SEABROOK Author: The Magic Island WILLIAM B. SEABROOK Author, The Magic Island and Adventures in Arabia Last January a new book was issued by Harcourt, Brace & Co., and almost over night William B. Seabrook became famous — the most talked about author of the most talked about book of the year. THE MAGIC ISLAND The book that caused such a furore is The Magic Island — a book about Haiti. It recounts the adventures and emotional experiences of Mr. Seabrook who spent many months living among the natives. He found among millions of blacks who dwell in electric lighted towns, jungle covered mountains, dark valleys, an emotional wisdom that we, and perhaps the whole civilized world, have lost. He found a people who know that life itself is a beautiful and terrifying adventure. He found a living religion, Voodoo, wherein is the ritual eating of flesh and drinking of blood, witchcraft, sorcery and black magic. He found living things that we have long thought dead in the storehouses of antropological lore. He is the first articulate white witness to its rituals, songs, its sacrifices. WORLD TRAVELER AND ADVENTURER Mr. Seabrook has been a traveler in strange places since his early manhood. He has a positive genius for living with primitive peoples FOUR CITIES SPEAK! NEW YORK TIMES —It can be said of many travelers that they have traveled widely. Of Mr. Seabrook a much finer thing may be said—he has traveled deeply. BROOKLYN DAILY EAGLE — Seabrook has an uncanny ability to woo you into his own experiences. CINCINNATI TIMES STAR — Beautifully simple and direct, unforgetable scenes are vividly and terribly alive. CHICAGO DAILY NEWS —Seabrook is as vivid as a Conrad novel. and learning their ways, habits and manner of thinking. No less a genius is he in translating their thoughts and emotions to us either on the platform or in books. His first book, Adventures in Arabia, attracted wide attention because it dramatizes the splendor, mystery, and cruelty of the desert. Seabrook spent over a year in Arabia for no moral, political or humanitarian reason, but solely for the joy and love of it. He became a Moslem and lived among the people. He was the guest of Bedouin sheiks, of whirling Dervish saints, the chiefs of the Druses, and the Devil-worshiping Yezidees. A DRAMATIC SPEAKER On the platform, Mr. Seabrook relates his unusual adventures in a most dramatic way, with light touches of wit and humor. These is an excellent point to every tale he relates. He is a striking looking man with a bold, rugged face that shows the exposure to sun, wind, sand and jungle. His voice is strong and vibrant with that quality so difficult to describe that holds an audience almost breathless. You live with him through his adventures, see the people he is with through his eyes, and when he finishes his tales, you feel as if you've just emerged from a hypnotic trance, so compelling is his recital.
