Children's Day
A Real Clown—A Circus Parade A Costume Contest
T
HE last day is really children's day and the Chautauqua managers had their 40,000 boys and girls particularly in mind when they planned this afternoon program, but we have an idea that the parents as well will want to come when they hear about
Circus Day
and the real clown that is coming. For who is there, young or old or in between, who does not welcome a clown?
Hughie Fitzpatrick is the name of the tumbling clown, whose contortions and antics keep his audience in roars of laughter or breathless wonder. Whether jumping about on the floor with his legs behind his head like a frog or balancing himself on two chairs atop a table, or telling funny stories, there will be just one laugh during the entire performance and that will start when he starts and finish when he finishes.
For years Hughie Fitzpatrick entertained the crowds of the Barnum and Bailey Circus and also at the New York Hippodrome. While it is said he can
squeeze laughs from a turnip
, yet after you have left the tent you will realize that with all the fun he gave you a lot of ideas of how to live to be better boys and girls, which means better citizens.
Be sure to be on time for the wonderful parade that will come just before the afternoon program. You all have a part in this, you know, with prizes given for the best costume. Hughie Fitzpatrick, the clown, will be there; the policeman and speeler; the bands; the freaks; the wild animals in cages; the ballet girls on horses; oh! just everything to make a real parade. It will be heaps more fun than any other circus parade, for you will know most everyone—even to the next door neighbor's house cat, locked up in the wild lion's cage; and what's more, the cages will all be open so you can see the animals. Isn't it the limit the way the circus parades have their most interesting animals all shut up so you can't see them at all?
Don't forget that you must have a Junior Chautauqua ticket in order to compete for a prize for the best costume. Perhaps Mr. Fitzpatrick will ask some of you to help him on the stage after the parade, so see just how clever you can make your costume.
There's a long parade a comin'
When Chautauqua gets to town,
A
really honest
Circus one
For all the children; and a clown
Who'll dance, and prance and entertain,
And drive away all care
.
The bears and tigers will parade;
The monkeys, too, will do their share
.
A band of clowns in colors bright
Will lead this pageant on its way,
As down the street they'll gaily march
Just like we see on Circus Day
.
Come join this jolly caravan
And be a
Junior
with our band,
And help to make this
old parade
The
really best
in all the land
.
