DEAN E. SMITH
For 20 Years Manager for Standard Oil in Burma. Lived Through Jap Invasion, Escaping with the Remnants of the British Army into India … Excellent Speaker ….
DEAN SMITH lived through the Jap invasion of Burma. January, February and March, 1942, he was behind the British lines. The month of April he was with the Chinese army, and retired with the remnants of the British forces into India in May. He then proceeded to the United States, arriving in New York City on the 13th of July, 1942. Having been in the Far East since 1915, 20 years of which he was manager for the Standard Oil for Burma, Dean Smith knows intimately Burma, China, India, the East Indies, Singapore, Malay, etc. In a straightforward manner, pulling no punches, he tells the story of the Jap invasion, why it was successful, and he outlines some practical plans for helping China. A stirring speaker, Dean Smith holds his audiences spell-bound.
A Native of Wisconsin
Dean Smith was born on a farm near Lake Mills, Wisconsin, the fifth generation on the same farm. He attended Lawrence College, University of Wisconsin and Harvard University. In 1915 he joined the Standard Oil Company of New York and for 20 years was one of their foreign managers in the Far East, when he retired. His wife was born in Mandalay, Burma. He was engaged in looking after their interests in Burma at the time the Japanese began the war in the Far East. It touched him closely. He had to leave his home in Rangoon, filled with fine furniture, a library of 2,000 volumes collected in a life-time of travel, and a valuable collection of Chinese porcelains and bronzes. According to his last report, Jap officers are enjoying his grand piano and comfortable mattresses. He and his wife were forced to flee. As stated before, they managed to keep ahead of the invading enemy and make their way to India.
A Stirring Speaker
As a speaker Dean Smith will stir his audiences with his straight-from-the-shoulder talks. There is no bombastic flag waving—just plain talk delivered in conversational and ready style by a keen American business man who SAW and LIVED the Far East for more than a quarter of a century. He cannot tell all that he saw and experienced, but he, nevertheless, tells plenty.
