PAULO GRUPPE AND ASSISTING ARTISTS
PAULO GRUPPE
One of the most distinguished Artists of the present day
Paulo Gruppe, the eminent violoncellist who returned to his native America from Europe as a youthful prodigy a number of years ago when his successes practically spanned the limits of two continents, has come back to us again, after almost two years spent abroad in the U. S. Army and an extended concert tour in France.
He was born in Rochester, N. Y., in 1891, but received his musical education in Holland and France. He has appeared in recitals and as soloist with orchestral companies in most of the large cities of this country.
Paulo Gruppe is first of all the natural born musician, intellectually and emotionally admirably balanced, and is then the astonishing instrumentalist whose beautiful tone and clear cut technique have enabled him to give such brilliant expression to the public as an unusual concert violoncellist.
His many appearances have tested his popularity both with a musical public and the critical authorities. In truth, in certain characteristics of his art he can hardly be surpassed by any cellist of the present age.
Mr. Gruppe needs no recommendation. His playing speaks eloquently for itself.—
New York Press.
Paulo Gruppe evoked from his sonorous cello a tone of breadth and penetrant volume.—
Philadelphia Ledger.
One certainly has rarely heard a performer of such magnitude.—
Daily Mail, Birmingham, England.
His technical skill is marvelous.—
Seattle Post Intelligence.
Like some magnificent barytone voice, like the departed Tagliapiltras, the Gruppe Cello sang out in first class performance.—
Globe-Democrat, St. Louis.
Mr. Gruppe has an unusually large and virile tone. It is capable of wide variation, both dynamically and qualifiably, and he is fully alive to the artistic value of contrast.—
The Chicago Tribune.
His tone especially in movements or pieces of slow tempo is quite lovely and his temperament decidedly fiery.—
London, England, Daily Telegraph.
In Europe and America, Mr. Gruppe has enjoyed the distinction of being soloist with representative symphony orchestras. Among these are:
The London Symphony Orchestra, London, England.
The Munich Symphony Orchestra, Munich.
The Russian Symphony Orchestra, New York.
The Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Chicago.
Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis.
Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, Minneapolis.
Kansas City Symphony Orchestra, Kansas City.
The Quebec Symphony Orchestra, Quebec, Canada.
He was also chosen as soloist with the great Pavlowa tour of the British Isles.
ROBERT MONAGHAN
Richly dowered with a lyric tenor voice
Mr. Monaghan whose beautiful and cultivated tenor has made him a pronounced favorite wherever he has appeared, is indeed a delightful artist. He is richly dowered with a lyric tenor voice of excellent quality and sings with authority, poise, elegance of style and much temperamental warmth.
Mr. Monaghan scored a triumph at Convention Hall, singing with surety, clearness and much temperamental warmth.—
Buffalo Inquirer.
Mr. Monaghan's fine tenor voice and cultivated style won his audience at once.—
Rochester Times.
Mr. Monaghan possesses a fine voice of much beauty and even in all registers.—
Buffalo Commercial.
The tenor of Mr. Monaghan was heard to excellent advantage in the Aria from Massanet's Griselidis, stamping him as a singer of fine attainments.—
Ithaca Journal.
Mr. Monaghan, with his beautiful tenor, proved to be one of the most delightful artists heard here this season—
Buffalo Courier.
The tenor solos were beautifully sung by Robert Monaghan, who sang with nice control and excellent taste.—
Rochester Post Express.
CAMILLE PLASSCHAERT
The Brilliant Young Belgian Violinist
Camille Plasschaert of Belgian and French descent, is the daughter of the famous Belgian Sculptor, Henri Plasschaert. She is another one of the many geniuses of the violin that Belgium has sent forth to America. Belgian temperament more than that of any other nationality, indeed, seems to comprise all the elements that make towards the natural adaptation for and understanding of stringed instruments. This has been proven by such masters as Ysaye, Gerardy, Thompson, etc. Its style is a combination of the scintillating imaginative French and the solid methodical German temperament. Camille Plasschaert, full of the desire to do her share, volunteered at once during the great war, and was active in camps and hospitals all over France, entertaining the boys with her violin and charming personality. The indirect result of this is her coming tour in the U. S. A. Her initial appearances have given reason to confidently predict a repetition of her already achieved successes abroad.
COREY WILLIAMSON SMITH
Pianist
Corey Williamson Smith, pianist, had the advantage of living in an atmosphere created by an artist-mother and musician-father, and with some years of study to her credit, she came to Philadelphia to enter the Combs Conservatory of Music, from which institution she graduated with high honors, after a few years of study with Gilbert Reynolds Combs, Director, Head of the Piano Department, and Dr. Hugh Clarke, Head of the Department in Theory and History.
Later it was her good fortune to be accepted as a pupil by Madam Teresa Carreno, with whom she studied until the death of that famous pianist and teacher.
In criticism of her work, Madam Carreno spoke most enthusiastically of her future, her unusual talent and peculiar natural power and command of the keyboard.
Leslie Hodgson, associated with Madam Carreno, with whom she also did some work, says of her:
She has proven herself the possessor of gifts of a high order. She is abundantly endowed with temperament and musical imagination and has developed an excellent technical and tonal equipment.
In addition to her activities in New York, Corey Smith was already well established in Philadelphia as a teacher, accompanist and pianist, when she went abroad.
During her work there she was associated with such well-known artists as Frances MacMillan, Paulo Gruppe and Madam Hortense Paulsen of London.
This pianist from our big West won her audience from the beginning with her big personality and graciousness of manner. She handled the bristling technical difficulties of the Grieg with the greatest ease.—
Denver Post.
A compelling virility and breadth of tone seldom found within the power of the woman pianist—
Baltimore Sun.
She has a powerful command over the keyboard combined with the big warmth of a genial personality.—
Philadelphia Ledger.
