THE SOWERBY PSYCHIC LECTURES
FOREWORD
THE SCIENCE OF PSYCHOLOGY stands midway between the two other great sciences of Theology and Philosophy, and any discussion of this science which does not reach out to both of these must of necessity be both narrow and one-sided.  Dr. J. H. Sowerby, being a graduate in both of these departments, and having for many years made personal and careful research and demonstration in the realm of Psychology, is eminently qualified to give the public authoritative information on the general theme, Psychic Phenomena in the Light of the Bible.

On the assumption that he who has the Bible has the key to all phenomena which is related to the human spirit, the Sowerby Psychic Lectures claim for Orthodox Christianity every discovery of modern thinkers in this realm, and seek to urge Orthodox students to an interest in this too long neglected field.

The effort of these lectures, th refore, is to show the great vantage-ground of Evangelical Christianity, as a medium through which to account for the wonderful psychic phenomena of this rapidly advancing age, and the effort is so successfully accomplished that no person who wishes to know TRUTH, whether desiring to be classed as orthodox or otherwise, can afford to miss these up-to-date discussions.

In showing the power of Mind over Matter in the healing of disease these lectures are eminently catholic, for while they are most devout in character they are not narrowed by the thought that God cannot or will not act where medicines also are used.  The conscientious physician is ever highly commended.

Every position taken in these lectures will bear the scrutiny of Evangelical Scholarship, while the mysteries which have been so carefully guarded and made to appear more mysterious by the various lecturers and cults which have heretofore promulgated them, are simplified and given to the public in language they can easily understand and fully appreciate.

These lectures have delighted large audiences wherever they have been given, and they are esteemed among the very best on the subject which have been presented to the public, from any source, up to the present time.




A WORD OF EXPLANATION
The Sowerby Psychic Lectures deal with and prove both philosophically and theologically the supremacy of the spiritual forces of man, in affecting the physical ailments of the life, and by careful instruction they show how this supremacy may be made effective.

They demonstrate not only the effect of the mind on the voluntary and involtary organs of the body, but they show the effects of the emotions on the circulation of the blood, as well as upon the nervous system.  By the use of the Sphygmograph (see cut) it may be shown that every emotion, as well as the various diseases, affect the action of the heart, and hence the circulation of the blood.  We present herewith sphygmographic writings taken from the reports of the United States Commissioner of Education, which show the normal pulse of youth and old age and also the variations produced by the diseases indicated before each writing.  Space in a circular will not permit the presentation of more of these writings, but it may be shown that in many cases the emotions will produce a greater variation in the records of the pulse than either the typhoid fever or the rheumatismal pericarditis with fever, as shown in the cuts here presented.

These lectures specifically point out methods for the control of the nervous system and the complete cure of many of the diseases to which human flesh is heir.  They also explain the various kinds and manifestations of Clairvoyance and Telepathy, and very fully show why these phenomena occur.  Suggestion and Magnetism

 are discussed and many illustrations of their effects on life recited.  All of these phenomena are dismantled of their mysteriousness and presented in a most helpful and interesting manner.

The final lecture deals with the act, spirit and results of Prayer, and this highest manifestation of devotion is made a working force for healing.  The lectures present a real working hypothesis, and many instances of the system's effectiveness are recited.
